Whichever way you approach the recent UK election, it would be fair to say that the Labour Party experienced a drubbing, resulting in a loss of 60 seats and handing the Conservative Party a large parliamentary majority. There has however been a fierce debate surrounding the reasons for Labour’s defeat, reasons ranging from Brexit, Jeremy Corbyn himself or supposedly racist voters. This debate has deeply spilt the two main factions of the Labour Party, between moderates and progressives. Blairites vs Corbynistas if you will. Moderates place the blame solely at the feet of Jeremy Corbyn, his supposed anti-semitism and poor electability. Ilhan Omar’s mere presence as the first Somali-American and one of the first Muslim Congresswomen - along with Rashida Tlaib -  does tend to ruffle a few feathers among the more bigoted politicians and news pundits, much like those who insisted that former President Barack Obama wasn’t American and was actually a Muslim who was born in Kenya. Progressives have claimed that POLITICO’s latest hit piece on Bernie Sanders and his net worth could be considered anti-Semitic and it’s hard to disagree with the evidence shown. Sanders recently released his tax returns which showed that his net worth could be up to $1.9M, and many anti-Bernie Democrats and cable news hosts - *cough ERIN BURNETT cough* - suggested that this would make Sanders a hypocrite, given how often you’ll hear Bernie railing against the 1%. Instead, what would make Sanders a hypocrite was if he suddenly changed his tune on rich people paying their fair share in taxes, but, spoiler alert, he hasn’t changed his message. This also makes him much more credible given the fact that his tax proposals would now actually affect his own pocket.
