A simple search of The Sun's Wikipedia page shows us that the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper has been a part of more misdemeanours than I've had hot dinners, with a majority of the Wikipedia sub sections dedicated to their most prominent scandals. The Sun's most prominent scandal has to be their coverage of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 people lost their lives as a result of overcrowding in the stadium which led to a human stampede as fans tried to exit. In their infinite wisdom, The Sun decided to publish false allegations on their front page, titled "The Truth" and made misleading allegations, claiming that the Liverpool supporters picked the pocket of the stampede victims, attacked officers and also urinating on the officers, subsequent investigations into the disasters has revealed these allegations to be wholly unfounded and The Sun is now banned from Liverpool and Everton stadiums and training facilities.
Now that you can see the type of smear merchants that we're dealing with, let's discuss the countless other instances of The Sun's misleading claims. As you can see pictured above, the Far-Right newspaper has completely contradicted themselves on the issues surrounding the Muslim community, pretending that their hateful rhetoric is in no way responsible for the sharp increase of Anti-Muslim attacks we see today.
One of the most notable attacks that we have seen more of recently is that of Darren Osborne, who had hired a white van and targeted several Muslim individuals exiting the Finsbury Park Mosque after their night time prayers, called the tarawih. The group leaving the mosque had noticed an individual who collapsed at a bus stop and rushed over and began an attempt to save his life via CPR. As they were doing so, the van rammed into them, injuring ten people. The man who had collapsed then passed away, with an investigation into his death finding that he had sustained multiple injuries. Some of those who had left the mosque then began beating the attacker until the imam intervened and stated that Osborne should be handed over to the police instead of being beaten. Witnesses have stated that Darren Osborne proceeded to shout "I want to kill all Muslims", "this is for London Bridge", "I did my bit", "you deserve it" and "kill me". The imam continued to protect the man from beatings and he is now in custody with his motive still being investigated - but we think the "I want to kill all Muslims" claim explains his motive perfectly.
Now, as The Sun acts innocent, wondering how could Darren Osborne possibly have been driven to commit such evil acts, it then becomes clear. Below the ON OTHER PAGES subheading, we are able to see exactly the type of rhetoric that can lead people to commit such atrocities.
So why is there a large increase in such attitudes? Well, if we were to believe The Sun, we may never know.

- The Sun ordered to admit that front page story which claimed "One in five British Muslims had sympathy for ISIS" was significantly misleading.
- The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has attacked The Sun for use of "offensive, discriminatory and provocative terminology" which fuels racist attitudes.
- The Sun newspaper deletes heavily-criticised article from Katie Hopkins that calls refugees escaping Syria "cockroaches".
So why is there a large increase in such attitudes? Well, if we were to believe The Sun, we may never know.
