Florida Lawmakers Claim Pornography Is More Of A Health Risk Than Guns Following Florida School Shooting
Following the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14th many of the young survivors have transformed into gun control advocates and formed an advocacy group called Never Again MSD, which began to gain traction on Twitter with the use of the hashtag #NeverAgain. Several prominent media personalities and politicians have praised the group of students on their activism, which has lead to the increasingly popular "the kids are alright", while many others admire their passion. The 'Never Again' facebook group created by the surviving students has amassed nearly 139,000 followers since the shooting, with celebrities such as George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey donating $500,000 each to the cause.
As the kids fiercely fight to ensure that such shootings never take place again, several on the political right have began to mock the survivors without remorse, with criticisms ranging from "seventeen dead children doesn't affect my Second Amendment rights" or idiot Dinesh D'Souza saying that an interviewed student looked "coached and a little deranged". Forget that people literally died, these people need their guns to protect themselves from an incoming "tyrannical American government" and that overrides dead children.
It gets even crazier, unfortunately. After rejecting a bill that would force a Florida House of Representatives debate on banning assault weapons and large ammunition magazines, survivors of the shooting began to become distraught after the bill was defeated, then Florida lawmakers moved on to the real issue that needs to be spoken about - the mental and physical effects of watching porn. Yes, really.
Let me get this out of the way before I mock this ridiculous assertion, there are legitimate cases of violent internet porn leading to a miniscule amount of violent acts against women, as well as some sexually active women stating that pornography may lead to men getting the wrong idea about sex as they want exactly what they see on the screen which is usually unattainable. A small fringe of the Feminist movement also seek to restrict internet pornography for what they see as the dehumanization and objectification of women in the industry.
Adult Actresses such as August Ames recently committed suicide after backlash from the porn industry as she claimed that she did not want to work with a male performer who had previously taken part in a gay pornographic scene. Ames stated that this was for "safety reasons" and it was her choice as it was her body while critics said Ames was being homophobic for her statement, she has however performed in girl-on-girl scenes so the homophobia statement may be incorrect. Some have said it was the "cyber-bullying" from the backlash that lead to her passing away, while others say she was battling severe depression. Male actor Nick Capra called Ames "the stupidest woman" he has seen in the industry, and others have told Ames that her "safety concerns" answer was unfounded as porn stars are tested and screened before any shoot can take place.
However, to say that pornographic material leads to health risks in large amounts of the general population is simply unfounded, especially when you include the fact that seventeen children are gunned down because of the ease with which Nikolas Cruz was able to acquire a firearm, and to simply dismiss that as a mental health issue is ridiculous. Of course addiction to pornographic material is a real thing and should be dealt with but for the vast majority - myself included - of people who watch pornography do not desire to commit a violent act against a woman or having it lead to a serious illness, it does happen of course, but to attempt to ban pornography outright, by the supposedly "freedom-loving" Republicans is hypocritical and f*cking insane.
