Admittedly this is relatively time-worn news, but because Conservative MP for Bromsgrove, Sajid Javid, has thrown his hat into the ring to become the leader of the Conservative Party since Theresa May’s recent resignation, it needs to be repeated.
Javid has hilariously been compared to former American President, Barack Obama, by Forbes magazine, and like basically any Tory Member of Parliament, he has been embroiled in controversy throughout his career.
Javid has previously made absurd statements such as labelling progressive, Corbyn-supporting, activist group, Momentum, as ‘neo-fascist’ and had to backtrack on a tweet he posted claiming that Jeremy Corbyn is linked with Holocaust denial.
In comes renowned conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones and his “news” show Infowars, both of which have been banned from more platforms than I’ve had hot dinners. In a tweet, Jones claimed that Javid is evidently part of the “Islamic takeover”, which is something that only exists in the imagination of the far-right, who claim that Europe is slowly being taken over by Muslims and us poor white folks will cease to exist.
Jones’ assertion is laughable in a myriad of ways, including the sheer ridiculousness of such thought. Firstly, Javid is the current Home Secretary, meaning that he has been put in charge of the UK’s post-Brexit immigration policy and has planned to slash EU immigration by 80% in last December’s Brexit immigration White Paper - how can those evil Muslims launch their takeover if the British government are aiming to cut the number of net immigration below 10,000, Alex!?
Javid is also a harsh critic of basically any form of Palestinian liberation or resistance to the Israeli occupation and is one of the staunchest supporters of Israel in the current Conservative cabinet. Sajid has previously claimed that out of any country in the Middle East, he would consider Israel as home and has even gone as far to use his political power to stop any local UK councils from imposing boycotts of Israel.
Former Head of the Conservative Party, Sayeeda Warsi, a fellow Muslim who has spoken out about the issue of Islamophobia within the party, has accused Javid of using dog-whistle politics: “he should read what these people are saying, because no matter how much he dog-whistles, no matter how much he panders to the right of our party, sadly the right of our party believe he’s far too Muslim to be the leader of the party.”
This just shows you how utterly hateful Alex Jones and his ilk are, that all of this explanation and nuance went straight over Jones’ head and instead he decided to fear monger about the religion Javid was born into instead of delving into his actual political beliefs.
