After President Trump and his administration's provocation of Iran led to the shooting down of an unmanned drone near Iran's airspace, several politicians have shown us where they stand on this administration's efforts to force a regime change war in Iran and remove the Ayatollah's from power.
There were obviously a vast spectrum of opinions, from war hawks who pretend the drone was merely minding its own business by flying in and around Iran's airspace, do-nothing Democrats whose only problem with Trump attacking Iran being that he must abide by the rules and ask Congress nicely first, to anti-war politicians such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren ridiculing Trump's obvious attempts at goading Iran, which he will then use as reason for the American military to invade Iran and take out the Ayatollah's.
Elizabeth Warren was recently asked by an attendee during a Florida town hall at Florida International University if she would go to war with Iran based on the current circumstances, Warren simply replied "No." Warren has also stated that she prefers to work with America's allies (Israel and Saudi Arabia presumably) in order to reach a diplomatic answer to the question of rising tensions with Iran.
Bernie Sanders, however, had a much more candid and forthright approach during an interview with CBS News. CBS' Margaret Brennan was tasked with interviewing Sanders about his thoughts on President Trump deciding not to attack Iran at the last minute, after Trump suggested that the damage the strike could cause would not be "proportionate" to the Iranians shooting down an unmanned drone.
Brennan asked Sanders, "Was President Trump's decision to call of the strike on Iran, the right one?" Sanders chuckled in response and said "See, it's like somebody setting fire to a basket full of paper and then putting it out, he helped create the crisis and then he stopped the attacks. The idea, that we're looking at a President of the United States who, number one, thinks that a war with Iran is something that might be good for this country.."
At this point, Brennan interjected, "he was just doing a limited strike." Sanders then responded sarcastically by saying, "Oh! JUST a limited strike, oh well I'm sorry, I just didn't know that it's okay to attack another country, with bombs," before adding "just a limited strike, that's an act of warfare."
Some of Sanders' detractors suggested that there was a problem with the way he answered the question and his sarcastic tone, because how dare Bernie challenge points put to him and actually campaign for himself, he obviously has no shame.
The much larger problem is how nonchalantly the media bang the war drums because they assume that America are the good guys and are always right by default. This is what makes Bernie Sanders response so great is that he realises that the most powerful country in the world can't just drop bombs on countries who defend their own airspace. If North Korea dropped bombs on Nebraska and said it was in response to President Trump's online provocation and threats of annihilation, they wouldn't be able to turn around and say that it's just a "limited strike" and the talking heads in the American media would once again be beating the war drums for America to respond.
Lastly, why was an unmanned American drone flying so close to Iran's airspace in the first place?
