Marshae Jones, alleged to have "sparked the altercation" which led to the shooting, has been charged with manslaughter while the shooter has been freed.
When women took to the streets in order to protest new draconian abortion laws proposed by several US states, notable conservative pundits insisted that the new laws weren't as bad as many women had feared and that they were just doing their moral duty to protect unborn children, but it’s doubtful Marshae Jones feels the same way. Jones was five months pregnant when she was shot in the stomach during an altercation with another woman and her fetus never survived the shooting. On Wednesday this week (26/06), Ms. Jones was charged with manslaughter in Jefferson County, Alabama after the police claimed that Jones was culpable because she initiated the conflict and "failed to remove herself out of harms way." "The only true victim in this was the unborn baby. It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued to fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby," said Lt. Danny Reid of the Pleasant Grove Police Department after the shooting in December 2018. Back in May, Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey, signed a bill known as the "Human Life Protection Act" which bans abortion at every stage of pregnancy and criminalizes doctors who perform an abortion procedure. Terri Collins, a Republican representative and sponsor of the bill has previously stated that she hopes the law will lead to a legal challenge in which Roe v. Wade (the Due Process clause of the fourteenth amendment to the U.S Constitution provides a "right to privacy" that protects a woman's liberty to choose whether or not she has an abortion) will be overturned. The shooter was a second woman named Ebony Jemison and she was initially charged with manslaughter in the death of the unborn child, but the charge was dismissed after the grand jury failed to indict her. After which, police stated Ms. Jones "involvement and culpability" would be called into question and presented to a grand jury to see if she would be charged. "When a five-month pregnant woman initiates a fight and attacks another person, I believe some responsibility lies with her as to any injury to her unborn child," said Lt. Reid. "That child is dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn't seek out unnecessary physical altercations." However, there has been no statement made as to Ms. Jones specific role in the altercation and whether she was responsible for the escalating tensions. It's unsure how this conclusion could be reached, as Ms. Jones never "initiated" the altercation with the purpose of causing harm to her unborn child and would have been unaware of the second woman carrying a deadly weapon and would actually use it against her. It now seems like the large swathes of protestors storming the streets in opposition to these abortion proposals may have had a point after all. |
MSNBC's "The Last Word" host Lawrence O'Donnell describes his politics as a "practical European socialist", which essentially boils down to being a nordic-style social democrat, usually in favour of a mixed economy with a generous welfare state and has defended his positions on MSNBC news shows that typically frown upon stepping outside the neoliberal bubble. O'Donnell is no progressive hero in the context of american politics, sometimes scolding progressive politicians whenever they mildly criticize the Democratic Party, such as when Bernie Sanders tweeted about having to take on the Democratic establishment as well as Republicans, O'Donnell decided to concern troll Sanders by claiming that the Democratic establishment wouldn't pass Sanders' proposals if he wasn't nice to them. Over the course of the last few months an old video of O'Donnell explaining how to move the Democratic Party further left and how the party treats the p...
