At a recent Bernie Sanders campaign rally in Iowa, Sanders surrogate Rashida Tlaib caused controversy when instead of quieting a crowd that was booing Hillary Clinton when she was mentioned by name, Tlaib instead stated: "No we're gonna boo, we're gonna boo. When we win the haters will shut up."
This angered the media class and voters that wouldn't have even supported Sanders in the first place. The 'Very Serious People' of online Democratic discourse slammed Tlaib, claiming that she was being divisive and harming Sanders chances in the upcoming primary. Some went a step further, claiming that Tlaib wasn't a true ally to women and their struggles if she was jabbing at Hillary Clinton, while others made videos screaming "f*ck Rashida Tlaib" into the camera for their Twitter bubble and others want her to be primaried and removed from Congress.
This has come after Hillary Clinton has spent the last few years trashing Bernie Sanders at any and every opportunity. Ever since 2016 she has claimed that his supporters are a bunch of angry white sexist men who wouldn't support her because she's a woman. In Clinton's book 'What Happened' regarding the 2016 election, she increased her attacks on Sanders by claiming that he was "promising everybody free ponies" and because she wasn't in favour of 'free ponies' that Sanders supporters would attack her for it.
More recently, Clinton went on Howard Stern's show and they both joked that Sanders was effectively trying to become class president by promising everyone 'free chocolate milk and free everything'. Clinton then created further controversy after she claimed that "nobody likes Bernie Sanders, he was in Congress for years and got nothing done, only one senator liked him." In response to this #ILikeBernie trended first on Twitter and Sanders responded by saying "my wife likes me" which garnered him credit for not stooping to Clinton's level. Sanders was nicknamed the "amendment king" for his ability to get favourable tweaks to more conservative bills implemented and a Republican congressman stated that Sanders would purposefully leave his name off of bills that he has influenced so that they have a higher chance of passing through Congress.
According to the Very Serious People online and deeply entrenched supporters of Hillary Clinton all of the previously mentioned attacks on Sanders are completely fine, she can attack a front-runner in the Democratic Primary and potentially influence voters opinion of a candidate as much as she likes but the second someone from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party dare to return fire towards Clinton and with something as mild as 'boo Hillary Clinton', they all lose their collective minds.
Tlaib was hailed as a liberal hero and a strong woman of colour by these very same people when back in early 2019, shortly after being elected, Tlaib said: "We will impeach this motherfu**er [Donald Trump]". Tlaib was praised even further by these same people when back in 2016, Tlaib was physically removed from a Trump campaign event in Detroit as she protested his candidacy. Video of Tlaib being removed went viral on Twitter as the people who now criticise her were promoting her as a beacon of activism against Donald Trump.
There are two prominent sayings among these Clinton supporters online, one is: "Vote Like Black Women" and another is: "Support All Women". Funnily enough, these beliefs do not seemingly extend to women of colour who support Sanders for President, such as Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pramila Jayapal, who have all been denounced from these online circles for daring to support Bernie Sanders. Imagine actually being principled in your ideological beliefs like these women are, crazy I know.
This has all been summed up in one excellent 2019 article titled: "I Support Strong Women of Color Unless They Are Politically To My Left" which hilariously details how people of color and women are accepted in liberal discourse unless they step too far to the left. One of the best parts within the article is: "Then there are strong women of color like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Nina Turner and Angela Davis. I really want to like them because it's beneficial to me to use them as props, but I just can't get behind them once they start expressing their beliefs." Give the article a read, it sums up these people perfectly.
